About Truck Camper Journeys
Learn more about Truck Camper Journeys and what you’ll find on the website.
Truck Camper Journeys is a travel website documenting our adventures across North America in a truck camper. We share destination guides, travel stories, campground experiences, hiking adventures, and practical tips to help inspire others to Travel Beyond the Horizon.
Truck Camper Journeys is created by Ian, a lifelong truck camper and outdoor enthusiast. After a 41-year career in commercial banking, retirement provided the opportunity to return to truck camping and share the places, experiences, and lessons learned along the way.
To learn more about our story, visit our Who We Are page.
Truck Camper Journeys was created to inspire curiosity and encourage others to explore the hidden beauty, rich history, and natural wonders of North America. We believe some of the best adventures are found by taking the scenic route and discovering places beyond the well-traveled path.
We enjoy exploring North America’s national parks, scenic byways, historic routes, waterfalls, lighthouses, bridges, and other destinations that make North America special.
We publish new destination articles, travel stories, and videos as new adventures unfold, usually on Saturday. You can also subscribe to our newsletter or visit the What’s New! page to stay up to date with the latest additions.
Truck Camper Travel
Learn more about truck camping and how we travel throughout North America.
A truck camper is a demountable recreational vehicle designed to fit snugly into the bed or flatbed tray of a pickup truck. They enable access to rugged, off-road terrain and remote “boondocking” spots that larger RVs cannot reach.
The most compelling reason is the ability to reach remote boondocking sites that are inaccessible to trailers or motorhomes.
We enjoy a combination of both. Depending on the destination, we may stay in campgrounds with full amenities or camp in more remote locations where self-contained camping is permitted. Every trip is different, and we choose the option that best complements the experience we’re looking for.
Our travels focus on the natural beauty, history, and scenic places that make North America unique. We especially enjoy exploring national parks, scenic byways, historic routes, waterfalls, lighthouses, and bridges.
Some journeys are carefully planned months in advance, while others begin with a simple curiosity about a place we’ve never visited. We enjoy discovering destinations through history, scenic routes, recommendations from fellow travelers, and the unexpected places found along the way.
The Rig
Learn about the truck camper and equipment that make our journeys possible.
A 2026 Ram 5500 Big Horn 4×4 Single Cab Flatbed with a 6.4L HEMI® V8 engine and a 2026 Journey Custom Truck Camper. The detailed specifications are on The Rig page.
A truck camper offers the freedom to travel both highways and back roads while keeping everything we need in one compact, self-contained unit. It provides a balance of mobility, comfort, and convenience that fits the way we enjoy exploring.
Yes. We enjoy sharing the truck, camper, equipment, and modifications we use during our travels. Visit The Rig page for details about our current setup and the gear that travels with us.
Like many truck camper owners, we’ve made changes to better suit the way we travel. As our setup evolves, we update The Rig page with the modifications and improvements we’ve found most useful.
Our gear varies depending on the journey, but generally includes camping equipment, hiking gear, photography equipment, navigation tools, and other essentials that help us travel safely and comfortably. We highlight many of these items throughout the website and on The Rig page.
The goal is two weeks. While our truck camper is equipped to support extended travel away from hookups, the duration depends on factors such as water use, weather, and electrical consumption.
